Haunted house

Story by Tygriss on SoFurry

Another piece I wrote for homework, was a piece for Halloween and yes it is riddled with examples from a few horrors. I don't like horror that much, and I have never read horror so had to improvise. I thought I did quite well all else considered ^.^

I approach the supposed haunted house wearily, a relic from the Victorian period. The run down exterior not at all welcoming. The windows were dark with grime, the doors were badly faded and the once white paint had being yellowed with age and neglect. I reach forward towards the door knob, shakily. My breathing grows deeper before wrinkling my nose at the staleness coming from the house. My heart thuds in my chest, the outward appearance just making me think again about doing this. I look forlornly behind me, at the setting sun and think of backing out as I breathe deep the cool, autumn air. But no, I couldn't back down now. All this for a dare, for me to disprove that ghosts exist. "They are not real...they are not," I mutter to myself before opening the door, trying to still my racing heart.

It opens, of course no one bothered locking it. No one dares come here, so why bother locking it? The door shuts on its own behind me with a thud, causing me to jump before muttering, "Bloody wind," as my hackles rose in tension. The interior was even worse than the outside, with very little of the setting sun filtering through. I turn the flashlight of my mobile on and sweep the small light around the place. Everything was as dated and worn in here. The story went that in the first half of the 80's, a young girl had suffered greatly at the hands of her cruel parents, to the extent that she hung herself in the attic by a beam. It was said she haunted the house, looking to make others suffer as she did so she wouldn't be alone.

Every bit of the house was musty and dusty, cobwebs covering all the corners of the house. I went from room, to room, each filling me with a foreboding feeling. The living room with the old box tv and bug riddled furniture and faded walls. The kitchen with its depressing look, mould growing everywhere and rusted pots here and there, I could swear I smelled something rotting but couldn't gather the courage to look. After trying various other rooms that were as foreboding, I finished up at the smallest room that looked it had being used as storage and cleared out in a hurry. The walls were lined with scrapes and chips of the faded blue paint room.

Laying my sleeping bag down and pillow from a ruck sack after clearing as much dust out as possible, I manage to chink open the window, breathing a sigh of relief as the stale air was filtered out. "Be glad to get this over with..." I muttered, thinking the first thing I will do when I got back home was have a bath to get the stink and grime off.

I don't remember falling asleep, but I must have dozed off at some point. I woke up, feeling very cold which I found unusual as it had being a very mild autumn. I look to the side to shut the window, only to realise it had already being closed. I get up puzzled, surly no one would have come into this forsaken place? Trying for the handle it stays firmly stuck in place. I try the window and it won't budge. Suddenly, I have a very bad feeling about this.

I reach for my mobile and turn it on, only for a screeching sound to emit from the speaker before the screen displays a horrific image of a girl hanging by her neck and goes dead. Dropping it in shock with a surprised cry, it hits the ground with a dull thud. Forgetting about it, I yank the door open only to see the hallway glowing an eerie red, the light source coming from the long dead light bulbs, cracks and any other open areas including from under the doors of closed rooms.

I make for the stairway, wanting to be out of this nightmare as I hear the laughter increase in volume, turning from an innocent girl laugh to maddening, derisive laughter as each door I pass shows me a glimpse of the horrors within, each containing tortured victims hanging from the beams of the roof as the scent of a dozen rotting corpses fill my nose, making me want to double over and vomit.

Stopping at the stairs to try and catch my breath, I feel something akin to ice on my shoulder. As if in slow motion, I turn my head round to see a sight that fills my heart with ice, fear freezing me in place. There behind me was a phantom of a girl, long flowing white hair, blood forever stained on her chin and eyes vacant and laughing at me, and that red ring around her neck where the rope had being. "Why are you going? Come, play with me," she said in what sounded like a badly distorted girls voice through a long tunnel, "we will have so...much...fun."

I trip over backwards, falling down the stairs, covering my head with my hands to try and blunt the blows before fetching up at the bottom of the stairs. Dazed and hurt I shake my head to try and rid myself of the worst, I use the wall for leverage, trying to stand with shaky knees and stagger towards the front door. I reach for the handle but...its locked. I try again, with more force but nothing.

Suddenly that same, icy grip is laid on my shoulders as I am dragged back up with inhuman strength and realise, it was all over. "Welcome. My new...toy." The last thing to come out of my throat was my unheard scream.
