A Dream of Dolphins: Humble Beginnings

Like yesterday, and the days before, Greg walked on foot towards Andy's Aquarium. He liked the freedom of personal transportation. Nobody looked at him. Nobody cared about him. People went about their daily lives with coffee or phones in their hands and nothing but plans in their minds. Everybody had a purpose, a goal they strived to reach since their childhood.

Greg's purpose was to get to his job on time. He started running, putting all his energy reserves into that two minute jog that got him in front of the tin can that branded itself as an aquarium. Andy branded his name with white on a sea of blue.

Andy's Aquarium. He called that original. Others called him cheap, hoax, skank, loser, and other derogatory terms. The only waves in the city belonged to Sapphire City. That was a real aquarium build into a real building, not a poor imitation sheltered inside a former warehouse.

Greg could have been part of it, yet like the supervisors, the caretakers, cleaners, and even Andy himself, he made the wrong choice somewhere in the past, and now he had to make up for it.

“G'day Greg. How's morning treating ya?" Tony put aside his phone to show actual interest in his colleagues. He was a jaguar, quite nice compared to the ordinary felines. He deserved at least a greeting.

Yet Greg walked right past him. He didn't care if Tony felt offended. Didn't even have the willpower to turn his head and make eye contact with him. Greg knew only two things: the location of his destination, and that the two kilometers he walked from home to this aquarium-wanna-be exhausted him more than he possibly imagined.

Two more colleagues passed by him on the way to the dolphin pools, offering their own greetings. Greg nodded quickly, keeping his eyes on the corridor stretching ahead of him. Svetlana was the only person he wanted to talk to. The others were redundant to his plans, unimportant in the dull life he sailed through every single day.

The rusty doors took a firm push to slide open, but Greg managed to create a crack all on his own. He pushed his lithe body through, wincing with obvious discomfort.

“Need a hand there?" a tired voice asked.

“No, no," Greg stuttered as he waved at Svetlana. “I'm almost…ghh…almost through."

“Doesn't look like that from here."

Greg gritted his teeth and pushed himself through on the other side. “Easy."

“Didn't look like that," Svetlana said again.

Greg couldn't give a single damn what it looked like. He made his way up the spiraling stairs leading up to the pools, throwing an eye or two at the reasonably sized tanks stretching along the walls of the building a few meters away from his position.

Both of them were empty.

“They didn't arrive?" he asked when he finally reached his way to the top.

“Nuh-uh," Svetlana shook her head. She stood on the ground, too lazy to even stand up properly. “Delivery's late. Something about a flat tire or some crap like that. I swear these drivers make up all sorts of excuses to eat the last doughnut, drink the last sip, jack-off in the bathroom or shit like that."

“Yeah," Greg agreed, panting heftily from the effort it took to climb those damn stairs. “I'll…I'll be there with you in a sec."

“Don't. I'm climbin' down, sweet cheeks."

She could have said that earlier. The bitch probably wanted him to wear himself out. It was infuriating how nonchalant she was about her job. Svetlana was a parasite, the kind of colleague that always grew off someone else's back.

Greg swallowed his frustration. Lashing out at her just took too much energy. He started climbing down., waiting until she was a couple of stairs behind him, then squeezing himself to the side, waving her forward.

Svetlana slapped the back of his head.

“Ow."

“You can say that again."

Greg would have if his defensive instincts didn't block the second blow. “I don't have time for this."

“Me neither, so move, grape eyes."

Greg hated to be called names. He looked down, then back at Svetlana, wondering how loud she would scream if he pushed her fifteen meters or so below.

He blinked twice, then focused back on the present, eating those damn stairs one step at a time. Thoughts like that were dangerous to play around with, but sometimes, when the time passed too slow and every other worry sailed away from his mind, Greg couldn't help treating himself to ridiculous scenarios.

“So what you're planning on doing today?" Svetlana asked once she stepped onto the hard ground.

“The same as you. We'll check the merchandise when it arrives and devise a proper way to tame it."

“Mhm. Mhm. Sounds decent. Looks like you have it handled."

That sounded too much like a cop-out. Greg looked over his shoulder. Svetlana was no longer there. When he turned his head back, he saw her walking towards the exit. Was she leaving?

“Hey."

“I'll just go for a sandwich you bum. Want one too?"

“Nah, I'm good. Just come back fast."

She did that stupid mhm of hers again before her ugly butt disappeared behind the rusty doors. Greg let out a monstrous sigh. Svetlana became an annoying bitch a long time ago, but only recently she made up these idiotic excuses to feed her smoking addiction. She could ruin her lungs all she wanted as long as she returned.

The problem was, Svetlana had an interesting definition of short breaks. Greg waited by himself for over an hour, twiddling thumbs, making plans, turning his tail this way and that until the growls and screeches of of heavy machinery reached his ears.

“Yo!" a voice came from behind the doors.

Greg jerked to awareness.

“Yeah you. Help me with these doors bro."

Greg started walking, but the beefy pitbull widened the doors without as much as a sweat.

“You slow man. Just stay out of our way, eh?"

“I'll…right…I'll just…"

“Yeah. Figured you're gonna relax, veggy boy. Roll it in, Mike."

A group of canines, all dressed in the blue uniforms of the delivery company pushed a portable water tank inside.

“Where's the pools?"

“Huh?"

“Pools? Water?" a husky snapped his fingers in front of Greg's dazed face. “You on the pills, man? Tell me where to put these damned dolphins in."

“I…just tired, yeah," he waved a finger around the room, “Tank A on the right, tank B on the left."

“Separated?"

“Nah, they're tied through an underground tunnel, but-“

“The dolphins, dickhead," the husky growled. “You want 'em in the same tank or separated? Can't promise they won't bite or fuck the shit out of each other if you put them together."

“Err…separated, yeah. Yeah. One A, one B."

“Got it, chief," the canine turned away with an utter look of distaste.

He didn't like him. Nobody did, so Greg just found the shadiest corner to lay low until those delivery bullies rolled back through the doors with their stupid-ass tank.

“This is stupid," he whispered to himself. “Bloody and utterly stupid. Andy's gonna drill me when he realizes I don't know jack about his stupid ferals. Then he'll come for Sveta. She'll probably put all the blame on me. Greg did this, Greg did that. Fucking joker if I ever knew one…"

It wasn't really her fault though. Everything started with Andy. His ridiculous dreams built this place. He envisioned a second Sapphire City fueled by a constant river of visitors, investors, rich guys with kids and so on. What he didn't anticipate was the cost of the rent, the measly look of his building, and the competence of his staff. Greg earned four hundred a month to feed the dolphins, clean them, pamper them. That was not what real trainers did. Rumors said Sapphire City made huge advances in breeding. In a year or two, domesticated dolphins could replace water scooters or motorboats as method of transportation. They would also play around with spoiled kids, or be the attraction of everybody rich enough to afford his own private pool.

Greg sighed. What those boys inflicted upon those poor empty tanks did not come even close to the domesticated, highly intelligent creatures Greg was thinking about. Andy bought pure ferals, because they were cheap, easy to maintain, and not picky with their meals.

They were also a nightmare to train. Greg was half tempted to climb up there and check them out, but the sight of those stairs drained every last bit of energy he held within his legs. He leaned against the wall with a sigh and waited for his partner to return.

She came two hours after the dolphins have been delivered.

“They're here?"

“Can't you hear them?"

She licked the drops of coffee from her lips.

Greg rolled his eyes. “Wow. That must've been one hell of a break. You sure don't want a comfy bed to rest in? Or maybe a pillow to-"

“You here to judge me or what?" Svetlana cut in.

“No. Of course not," Greg said. “I'm just reminding you that we've got a job to finish."

“And I'm reminding you these are bought from my momma's salary," Svetlana lifted a bag heavy with food stuffs. “Andy shits on us with the money he gives, so I've no problem shitting right back in his ugly face."

Though Greg agreed with her stellar judgment, he couldn't badmouth his boss to someone lesser than him.

“Fine. I'll give you a few minutes to drink your coffee, then we'll worry about the dolphins. That alright with you?"

“Yah," Svetlana thrust the bag up and down. “There's something in here for you, if you're hungry."

“I'd like a burger."

“Hotdog. Got you a hotdog. But help yourself to anything you pick. That was quite a bit of waiting I put you through."

Greg managed a faint smile. “Well, let's say you just missed some very nasty doggies."

That juicy burger gave him the strength needed to conquer the stairs. Greg went towards tank A. His dolphin was making one hell of a noise, slapping the water and screaming like his own personal place was invaded.

“Got a screecher over here," Greg shouted. “What do you have?"

“Comatose," Svetlana shouted back. “It's not even moving. I think…think it might be dead or asleep or…something."

That sounded just about perfect. Greg rushed to the other side and crouched on the edge of the tank.

“Does it breathe?" Svetlana laid a hand on his shoulder.

“How the hell should I know?"

“Check its pulse or something."

Greg turned his head around, then gently pushed the arm off. “Really?"

“Just…just do something," Svetlana frowned. “You're the better swimmer, right?"

“Kinda."

“Then go! I can't tell Andy he got another dead-on-arrival. I just…fuck…" Svetlana turned around. The tremors that took hold of her body and the nervous scratches she applied to the back of her neck were an early sign of anxiety.

“I'm going in," Greg said.

“Now?" Svetlana's eyes widened.

“Or tomorrow, if you prefer it that way."

She nodded quickly and turned her head away as the male otter undressed himself. Greg wasn't about to just sit and wait until she had a freaking meltdown. Better he faced the lethargy of a dolphin than the fury of a panicked woman. He shed everything aside from his speedos, then delved through the cold water.

The dolphin was still unresponsive. Greg extended a hand towards it. He inched closer, and closer, barely touching its snout.

The creature jerked to awareness. Its muscular tail whirled around, catching Greg straight in the chest.

Bubbles of air burst out of his mouth. Svetlana's high pitched scream came from above, dwarfed into nothingness by the high pitched whistle of the restless dolphin. Greg pushed himself towards it, yet the feisty creature surged away from his grasp to swim in circles, poking him with its snout and slapping with the tail.

Greg tried to defend himself, but dolphins were unlike any opponent he faced on the ground. Their speed was dazzling, and the force exhibited by their touch could be compared to a cannonball. Greg's eyes puckered like dried grapes when that hard snout took him straight between his legs. He froze, swallowing mouthfuls of water, shivering with intense pain. Not a single muscle responded to commands, and he really thought he was going to drown until a force pushed him through the water's surface.

“Ghaah!" Greg spat a mouthful of water and crawled back.

“The hell happened down there?" Svetlana dropped beside him.

“It hit my… ghloah…hit my…"

“Your mouth? Your stomach? Your what?"

“My balls…" Greg gritted his teeth, surmounting another wave of fiery pain. “Why the heck…do you think…I'm moaning like a…ghhhmmmm!" he coiled into a fetus position. Lashes of agony licked around his sack, sending surges of debilitating pain around his entire body.

“That's harsh. Does it really hurt that bad? It looked like you were playing from up here."

“Y-yeah…playing. Tell that to that fucker who beat me worse than my school bullies."

“You'll get over it," Svetlana patted his arm, then retreated a safe distance away from the water.

“What…what are you doing?"

“Relaxing? Watching? Sitting? Nah, I don't wanna get my pants messy, but-“

“We need to get in there. Both of us!" Greg desperately pointed back towards the water.

Svetlana vehemently denied the request with several shakes of her arms, her head, and even a scrunched nose.

“It's our job, Sveta. If Andy gets wind of this, he'll-“

“He'll what? Fire us? We're the only team capable enough to handle these little monsters, and it's not like we're making one hell of a difference. Look at the last batches, Greg. What the hell did we do?"

“We got close," Greg said, and Svetlana scoffed.

“Yeah, as close as the class' retard got from scoring top grade. We've managed to touch them, but guess what? Millions of people do that at Sapphire City, with dolphins that are properly tamed in a perfectly safe environment."

“Are you afraid?"

“Yeah," she gave a firm nod of her head. “I am afraid to go in there after you almost drowned in front of me. Feel free to dive, but you're not making me throw my life away to please my retarded boss."

Greg remained silent. Svetlana was always prone to outbursts when things got tricky. She would come around after she saw these dolphins weren't the hellish beasts she made them to be. For that, Greg took another dive in the water, hoping the dolphin got used to his presence.

It didn't. Three tail lashes sent him jumping right out of the water.

“Had enough?"

“I…gah, I think I did," Greg spat a spurt of water out of his mouth.

Svetlana climbed down, then returned with a blanket. Greg wrapped himself cozily. He was tired of arguing, of stressing over deadlines, of trying to defend his douchebag boss, but most of all he was fed up with being so useless.

“How do you propose we handle these phins?"

“I don't know," Svetlana sat on her side, with her elbow propped on the ground and her head leaned against her palm. “I really have no idea. We can just leave 'em be and tell Andy they can't be tamed."

“That's the easy way out," Greg sighed.

“You have a better one?"

He looked towards the rippling water, and at the dolphins that came out to either breathe or have a bit of fun. “Mine involves more pain, more effort, and lots of failures. I'm not sure that's what you're after."

“Yeah. Cut me out of that please."

It wasn't a surprise to witness her agreement. She was one to quit early. Challenges never agreed with her kind of personality. Svetlana was careless and selfish. In some ways Greg mirrored her, yet even with his balls convulsing every time he thought about the dolphins, he could not remain idle.

“I know how it sounds, but let's give it a try at least. Every encounter we have with these phins is going to add to our resumes, and one day we might just have a chance at sling shooting into Sapphire City."

Svetlana chuckled. She pulled her knees close, then covered her mouth with a hand, most likely to avoid looking ridiculous.

“Glad I amused you."

“I'm…I'm not glad, Greg. I'm pissed about you, about Andy, about them. But you know why I'm laughing? Because you're the dumbest motherfucker I've met. You don't even know what species they are. Heck, I bet you can't even tell apart their genders."

“Not unless I stick my hand inside their slits, no."

“And you think you have a chance at working with the pros?"

“It's a dream, alright? I never said it'll be real."

“Let it fizzle then. Do what I do and stop fussing over Andy's idiotic requests. He wants domesticated phins? Then he should get a fucking expert to teach us. For months we've been scrubbing tanks, throwing fish, talking to these damned ferals. Nothing ever sticks to their heads, get that? They're dumb, otherwise we wouldn't call them beasts."

Though that dolphin's snout redefined the meaning of pain, Svetlana's words pierced deeper than wounds. Greg knew it was all futile. He gave up hope a long time ago. Was it really worth to press on against stacked odds? To waste all this energy on failing time and time again?

“We should at least identify their genders. Makes lying a lot easier if one of Andy's overseers inquires about our job."

“Smart. How do you plan on doing that?"

Greg flexed his fingers.

“You know I'll laugh when you come back moaning like a bitch, right?"

“I'll take that risk," Greg shed his blanket and walked over to the dolphin that grieved him.

“Wait."

He looked over his shoulder.

“We should feed them. That'll earn their trust, right?"

“Good idea. Who gets the bucket?"

Greg knew it was him before Svetlana pointed out with a cute wink. He went all the way to the freezer to retrieve two buckets of fish.

“C-ccc cold…"

“They'll give you a warm hug when you jump in. Which one do you want?"

“I'll take this one. Gotta take my revenge on this bastard, right?"

“I don't know, pal. Something tells me he's going to have his way with you."

“So he's a male now?"

“Takes one to know where it hurts the most," Svetlana said.

Despite not feeling particularly encouraged by that last comeback, Greg delved into his bucket and threw the fish one by one into the dolphin's tank. The bastard showed off by grabbing them from the air and doing flips and other aquatic maneuvers between portions. For that reason alone, Greg grabbed the bucket with both hands and threw the remaining fish on his head.

The dolphin's cheerful whistle calmed into splashing silence as he was bombarded with frozen goodness.

“How do you like it now, you hungry bastard?" Greg threw the bucket away to wash his hands in front of the dolphin with a victorious smile. “Not nice when you're buried under. See how you'll move now with all that fish-“

A torrent of water followed the dolphin's tail swipe. Greg's words buried all the way back into his throat as he gasped under the frozen curtain draping around him. From ears to toes, he was drenched, and the dolphin couldn't be happier with his achievement.

Greg took a deep breath and jumped in. He pushed his tail hard and his legs harder. The dolphin was still distracted, so he managed to grab his flippers before the dolphin managed to turn around.

Greg shut his eyes when his snout shoved into his belly like a battering ram. He let go of the flipper, then pushed himself forward, sliding his hand along the dolphin's belly. The creature froze when he touched the rift marking his slit. Greg's heart skipped a beat. He pushed a finger inside, tasting the warmer insides of the dolphin's inner muscles for a split second before he whirled around, smacking him into the wall with its powerful tail.

Greg gulped a mouthful of water. He protected his belly just in time. The dolphin prodded once, twice, thrice, then went straight between his legs once he found the most sensitive place of a male's anatomy. This time, Greg wasn't fast enough to protect his balls. He squeezed his jaws so hard they hurt, expecting the same fiery pain to explode within his nethers, but all he got was a gentle nudge.

He opened his eyes, completely bewildered. Did the dolphin lose his will to fight? He turned around, more intent on eating the floating fish than putting the invader into place.

Greg retreated up to get some air.

“How did it go?"

“Better. My balls are thankful for whatever kindness or craziness pushed him to leave."

“Told you my idea was going to work. Not even these feral beasts can refuse a tasty treat."

“Yeah. Good idea," Greg pointed out towards tank A. “When will you make acquaintance with yours?"

“A…a bit later. I'm going to let mine eat and stuff. Working with a heavy belly gives you cramps, right?"

“Right…"

For the remaining hours, Greg dived into his tank to try and rub some sense into his dolphin. He didn't seem any keener on physical contact than he was at the start. He stopped his irrational aggression though, so that was a bit of progress.

What annoyed Greg more than the dolphin's lack of cooperation was Svetlana. She kept watching from above like a scaredy maiden, sharing her advice in the form of endless blabbering and critique because she was too scared to dive in the same tank with a feral creature.

Multiple times Greg tried to reason with her, and as many times he was rejected. Svetlana always heeded no advice aside of her own, and this time it was no different.

The bell rang in the main hall, announcing the end of the day.

“Well, that was productive," Greg said as he wiped himself with a towel. “We'll have to do this again tomorrow. Slowly get them used to our presence. Once they become comfortable with us, we'll move onto touching, training, and other things."

“Mhm. Sounds good."

“Something's bothering you."

“Nah, it's nothing," Svetlana waved him away when he took a step in her direction. “Just don't. Don't!"

“Sheesh."

“I'll do things my way, alright?"

“I wasn't-“

“You were, and I don't like the way you look at me. Just turn around or something."

Greg sighed. He waited minutes, and only a heavy bladder made him turn around and go for the exit.

That's where he met Andy. The husky wore a normal grey suit to go along with his black and white colors.

“Hey Greg. Is your partner around?" he asked, his voice deep, imposing, powerful.

“Yeah. Just a moment. Sveta! Andy's here."

“The fock does he want?" she shouted from above.

Greg paled. He half-expected the canine to show the white of his teeth. Instead, he just laughed. “She's got quite a mouth, doesn't she?"

“That she does. What can we do for you?"

“You'll know in a minute."

Svetlana arrived in a flash. “Hey boss. What's up?"

“One thing, actually. A big one. I have to cut your month in half."

Svetlana opened her mouth, shut it, then left it agape. Greg just frowned, too angry to just remain silent.

“What? Why? We're nowhere close to-“

“I know, I know," Andy said. “Takes time to domesticate dolphins. However, the sapphire boys are going to host their annual party and that's going to shine a bad light on us if we don't show any progress."

Greg hopes melted into a puddle of nothingness. Heat rushed through his veins. The kind of heat that made him act stupid or flee at the earliest convenience.

“How's a freaking party relevant to what we're doing here? It's…God, this is…"

Svetlana backed him up. “We're already way below them, boss. We're ants! Nobody's going to care if we take a month or a year handling our own phins!"

“And that's the problem," Andy pointed out. “I want us to get noticed. I want to be at the presentation stage, close to the microphone, close to the people! This is our chance to do something big, to reach for the stars!"

Svetlana scoffed, her arms crossing above her chest, a fierce look darkening her eeys. “You're dreaming. We don't have the time. We lack the equipment. Your staff barely has the required competence to even wipe their asses-“

Andy's lips pulled up into a fierce snarl. “I believe I heard enough of that," his fierce emerald eyes made Greg feel small and minuscule when they settled on him. “What do you think? Talk to me. Man to man."

“I…it's…yeah, I think we can pull it off."

“See? Water speaks for water," Andy licked his fangs with obvious satisfaction. “And you can be sure I'm going to take the word of an otter any day over a human's."

“Understood that…sir," Svetlana looked into the ground.

Andy ignored her. She was no longer relevant to his plans. Greg was. And that scared him a lot more.

“There's going to be quite a bit of pressure on you. That's ok. I hate it, you hate it, everybody hates it. I don't expect you to work some crazy magic on those beasts, but I want a successful breeding. I don't care how you do it. They can be drugged or tied or even hurt for all I care. Ethics and laws aren't my strong suite. Just do whatever it takes to get the job done, understand?"

Greg moved his head up and down, too stunned to properly comprehend the situation.

“Alright," Andy patted his shoulder. “You're a good employee, Greg. Hard working. Focused. I'm not misplacing my trust, right?"

“No sir. You're…uhm…you're making the right choice."

“Good. See that your assistant agrees with my requirements. I'd hate to reallocate her salary, but it will happen unless she pulls her weight."

Greg pulled Svetlana closer to him. “I'll bring her up to speed."

“Good, good. I'll leave you then. Have a good night!"

“Wait," a silent whisper came.

Greg's ears went flat when he saw Andy turn around with one of the meanest scowls he could conjure.

“How do we breed them? Where?"

“That's not my concern. In, out, I don't care. Oh, and I'm going to need a sample of your success, so please collect the male's seed in a bag or a condom or whatever else you can think of, alright?"

They both stared without speaking a single word.

“That's all. See you tomorrow!"

Relief returned when those rusty doors banged shut.

Svetlana was the first to leap away. “Hooooly fuck. Holy fuck. Two weeks? Is that guy for serious?"

“You saw his eyes. He'll trample us both before he sees his business buried under the weight of competition."

“God…" Sveta walked around, scratching her head, sighing with disbelief. “So we have what, two weeks to mate them? That is insane. Nobody ever managed that in a month. Years. And we have two freaking weeks?"

“We'll work something out," Greg clasped his hands. “Seed. That's what we need."

Svetlana's eyes brightened. “And we can tell him the breeding failed, or the male's infertile."

“It's not like he's going to check him out, right?"

“Greg, you're a genius! Come. Come!"

He lifted an eyebrow, confused by her sudden shift in attitude. “What are you babbling about?"

“I'm buying dinner, you idiot. You coming or not?"

“Oh, right. Right! I'll be with you in a minute. Left my clothes up there."

Greg rushed up. He ignored the waste of energy, disregarded his mixing apprehension and excitement until he reached the top. He pointed a finger at the dolphin, then smiled.

“You're going to give me your seed, pal, one way or the other. You've got a week before things go sour. Better have that cock up and about, or else things will get hairy for you."

No reaction came. Greg shook his head. He dressed up quickly, then went downstairs. Beasts always remained beasts, yet now he had a tasty dinner to attend to, and Fatass burger had the best burgers money could buy. Greg ordered a delicious double fatass while Svetlana kept it simple and regular with an ordinary meat pie. While they ate, they talked briefly about their dreams and desires. Greg kept rather silent. He didn't want to ruin such an enjoyable night with tales of sorrow and pain, so he listened to Svetlana while she blabbered about her dream to be a model. Apparently she had been on that path for a while until her uncle refused to pay the thousands dollars required for bribes or other sneaky way to get into the business.

It was a bit of a shame, but not a humongous one. Svetlana wasn't exactly an eye catcher with her straight black hair or her unimpressive brown eyes. She looked a bit like Arrow in that regard, though the comparison was poorly fit since he was a dog and she was a human. Still, that dog had more heart than Svetlana. The more he thought about him, the more eager Greg became to return home.

He said his farewells shortly he finished his burger. The walk home barely took a noticeable amount of time. Greg took the elevator, too tired to climb the stairs after such an eventful day.
